Water and sanitation in Africa is critical to controlling diseases. Buruli Ulcer (BU) is a terrible disease that manifests itself in African communities because of the lack of clean water and that it is so difficult to find the cases of BU throughout Africa. Every dollar raised for waterinafrica will go towards providing clean running water, finding and treating instances of BU of which most cases are in children.

Fundraising Tips

Over the years many individual citizens and churches have sponsored fund raisers for W.A.T.E.R. in their homes, at churches and at other locations. The concept is that you bring your friends, church goers or family together with the intent of raising money for a borehole or contributing to one with whatever amount you manage to raise. Many occur during the second half of the calendar year as a means to raise tax deductable funds, collect in lieu of Christmas gifts, etc. This is also consistent with the West African drilling season which begins in December and runs through around June (depending on when the rainy season starts).

Fundraising Events

• Las Vegas, Nevada - February 23, 2013

Global Charity Foundation will host a fund raiser at Treasure Island Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.  The event will raise money for a variety of causes including next years Ghana scholarships.  Good luck to Dr. Reeta Thurkal and the GCF board and partners.

• Millersville, Pennsylvania - October 12-14, 2012

Dr. John Wallace as well as the Nursing school, Sustainability Department and Biology Department hosted events at Millersville University to raise awareness within the student body and community for Buruli Ulcer.  The students in the Biology Department made a contribution to WATER.  We thank them, Dr. Wallace and everyone at Millersville.   

• Manitowoc - Wisconsin Nov. 15, 2011

Hosted at the Lighthouse Inn, local Attorney Mike Lambert brought together members of the community to fundraise for a variety of African causes.  As a result of the fundraising activities $4,500 was donated for Buruli Ulcer surgeries in conjunction with the drug study.

• Accra, Ghana - December 2, 2011

WATER held and awareness event in Accra, Ghana to bring attention to the Buruli Ulcer problem in West Africa.  Approximately 40 people attended including several large corporations, the American Chamber of Commerce, FHI360, Ghana Health Service and many more.  Lamisi Mbillah, WATER Board member and 2006 Miss World Beauty With a Purpose was the hostess.  Thanks Lamisi and everyone who took the time to attend.

 WATER typically raises money for water projects and disease control, however in certain cases other projects are pursued, particularly when the donor requests. The projects are all in Africa. Water projects are almost always done with another agency (CRS, Carter Center, UNICEF, etc). WATER provides the rural implementation expertise.  However, the majority of your funding is used for drilling, pumps, tanks, etc.  WATER also does quite a bit of maintenance, which requires immediate response and hence immediate funds.

All contributions are fully tax deductible. WATER is a 501(c)(3) corporation in the United States.
