Sahara Group and W.A.T.E.R.

On February 17, 2010, Sahara Group Ltd and W.A.T.E.R. entered into agreement to provide 8 boreholes and 2 hand dug wells equipped with handpumps into 7 different villages in Ghana.  Sahara Group Ltd is a conglomerate of businesses operating in West Africa and headquartered in Lagos, Nigeria.  Their business activities vary from real estate to service stations to oil transportation.  They have an active social responsibility arm which has already provided more than 50 boreholes and done other work in Nigeria.

The initial project will provide water for communities both in the northern part of Ghana in Guinea Worm and Buruli Ulcer affected areas, as well as in and around Accra in the water challenged area of Adentan on the north side of Accra.   Sahara is committed to linking its provision of water to disease eradication and control.  W.A.T.E.R. was selected to provide the assistance in Ghana due to its existing activities in Ghana and ability to link the effort with disease control in a cost effective manner.  Partners in Ghana include the Carter Center, The Ghana Guinea Worm Eradication Program, the National Buruli Ulcer Control Program and Samjust Engineering.
